Exploring AI imagery

The Services team was exploring how AI could help store associates with custom design services—things like generating images and ideas to inspire customers' custom jewelry pieces.

Problem

Unsure if store associates would use AI

This was a new concept for Signet and there were many assumptions and questions.

  1. What are the store associates mental models when it comes to AI?

  2. What features resonate and offer the most support with custom design?

Design

AI inputs: text prompt, image prompt, and SKU

I designed 3 flows and collaborated with the user researcher to run usability testing and see how well the designs aligned with store associates' expectations. While in store, she also did a kano study to prioritize the AI features.

  1. Start with text prompt

  1. Start with image prompt

  1. Start with a SKU

I also designed an annotation feature so store associates could annotate the details on the AI generated images.

AI is exciting but functionality is critical

The store associates had very few concerns about AI—actually, they were excited for the potential to make their jobs easier. High quality imagery and visualization is identified as the key value. If  customers aren’t finding exactly what they are looking for in store, AI can help bring their vision to life.

But, the AI must function as expected and generate high quality images.

Pending AI vendor readiness

We presented the research findings and final designs with the stakeholders and product team. I strongly recommended making sure that the AI imagery vendor could actually deliver the needed functionalities before locking in a deal.

In the end, this project was put on pause while the business explored other AI imagery vendors.
